Ways You can help...
Each local community based branch in our network across South Australia has a variety of needs for volunteers.
Drivers, deliverers and kitchen volunteers are needed on weekday mornings but other roles such as administration can be out of business hours. Key roles include;
This usually involves preparing and cooking meals between 7.00 am and 11.00 am each weekday at our kitchen branches. Cooking is a team effort, so everyone has a part in preparing the meals. Peeling, roasting, whipping, baking! There is always a role to play!
Kitchen helpers assist with meal preparation, tidying and even washing up! Usually between 7.00 am and 11.00 am each weekday.
Drivers use their own cars to deliver meals to clients between 11.15 am to 1.30 pm each weekday. The distance involved is generally less than 15 km and a driver reimbursement is available. Between 15 and 25 meals are delivered in each delivery round. Drivers need to have evidence of their own comprehensive insurance.
For safety and security reasons, both the deliverer and the driver deliver the meal to the client. So each driver works with a deliverer, to deliver meals into the homes of clients between 11.15 am and 1.30 pm.
Emergency Drivers and Deliverers
Time an issue? You can also volunteer as an emergency driver or deliverer. Rather than being on a regular roster, you'll simply be called on to fill in when a regular driver or deliverer can't make it.
Branch Administrative Roles
Branch Officers and Committee members assist in the running each of the Meals on Wheels branches. These are equally fulfilling and rewarding roles. Positions such as; Chair, Kitchen Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Client Service Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer, office support and IT roles, are all filled by volunteers.
Now that you have a better idea about volunteering for Meals on Wheels, you can find out more by making a freecall to 1800 854 453 and ask for the volunteering team.
