The Beating Heart of the South

Christies Beach, our largest Meals on Wheels SA branch, is truly the heartbeat of the south. With around 120 dedicated volunteers, this team delivers around 1,500 meals per week across 14 delivery rounds, including two rounds to Aldinga, ensuring nourishment and connection for our customers.
Leading the daily operations is Branch Coordinator Greg Dewar. Greg is always hands-on, often jumping in his car to help deliver meals. One of his standout initiatives is the Volunteer of the Month Award, which recognises those who go above and beyond. Winners receive a certificate and KFC voucher, and the top three nominees compete for Volunteer of the Year, announced at their annual luncheon. Their names are proudly displayed on an engraved plaque - a fantastic way to celebrate their contributions!
Greg describes the branch as more than just a team - it’s a family. “Hardworking, supportive, and always striving for excellence.”
This branch attracts truly remarkable volunteers. Many have been recognised at the Government Volunteer Appreciation Awards, and one even received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for lifelong service to the community. Among these dedicated individuals are Doris Crain and Kay Wicks, who have each contributed an incredible 50 years of volunteering service - an outstanding achievement that speaks to their unwavering commitment.
Christies Beach Meals on Wheels goes beyond meal deliveries - it fosters connection, support and a deep sense of community. Thank you all for making this branch the beating heart of the south!
