Community connections
Fostering healthy communities
Meals on Wheels SA offers more than just meals, focusing on enhancing wellbeing, independence, and social connections for older individuals in South Australia. Through the Commonwealth Home Support Program, they provide support to reduce isolation and loneliness, helping those who have had a My Aged Care assessment.
Volunteers host social opportunities for individuals and groups in the Northern and Southern suburbs, while other services include cooking classes and wellbeing workshops in various regions. These initiatives aim to improve overall quality of life

Our services
Ways we create community connections
There are plenty of programs to get involved with, either at home or in groups of friendly locals.
Individual Social Support
If you are experiencing feelings of isolation or loneliness you can enjoy a visit from a friendly volunteer to your home. Get to know a like-minded person who can assist you to explore community-based resources and activities based on your interests.
Volunteers can visit on a weekly or fortnightly basis. While volunteers are not able to provide transport, they can meet you in the community or attend activities with you.
If you would prefer, you can request a regular friendly phone call with one of our volunteers, at no cost to you.
It is a requirement that you live in the Northern or Southern Metropolitan suburbs of Adelaide, have registered with My Aged Care and then request a Social Support – Individual code from My Aged Care.
Group support in your community
Enhance your wellbeing, establish new friendships and explore various social opportunities in your community. Enjoy connecting with others at our Café Connections and Lunch Connections groups, located at various community venues.
If you are a CHSP eligible customer living in the north and south metropolitan regions, you may like to participate in a group-based activity. Find a session near you by downloading our program guide.
Fresh meal delivery
Every fresh meal delivered is an opportunity for connection. In addition to having a friendly chat, our volunteer deliverers provide wellbeing checks free of charge.
Other Food Services (OFS)
The Other Food Service (OFS) activities aim to educate, train and re-skill CHSP customers in preparing and cooking nutritious meals safely.
In a fun and safe environment, customers come together to “Cook and Connect”, enjoying learning simple ways to prepare light meals and healthy snacks while following quick and easy recipes. It is an opportunity to learn about and gather advice on topics such as nutrition for the older person, food safety and storage, making healthy food choices and cooking for one.
Customers are supported to prepare and cook a meal, which is then shared and enjoyed together.

You may be eligible for Australian Government funded aged care services if:
- You are an older person, usually 65 years of age or above (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
- You identify as isolated or experience loneliness
- You are finding it harder to enjoy the things you used to or to connect with other people.
You will need to have a face-to-face assessment of your care needs arranged through My Aged Care to determine if you are eligible.
Costs
CHSP providers receive government funding through grant agreements. They then provide subsidised services to older people.
Customers pay a contribution or fee (which varies between providers) towards the cost of services. Customers are expected to contribute towards the cost of the services they receive, if they can afford to do so.
Customers will not be asked to cover the full cost of services, and any fees must be agreed between the older person and Meals on Wheels SA before services start.
Meals on Wheels SA has a publicly available customer contribution policy that outlines how we determine the WISE participation fees.
Customers will not be denied services if they are unable to contribute to the cost of the activities. We are happy to discuss your unique circumstances and make arrangements to protect those least able to contribute towards the cost of participation.
For customer contribution ranges for each service type, see the CHSP National Unit Price Ranges and client contributions (Appendix G).

You have the right to make a complaint and offer feedback. The Charter of Aged Care Rights (the Charter) sets out the rights of all people receiving Government-subsidised aged care services. The Charter applies regardless of the type of care or service.
The Charter makes it easy to understand what quality care looks like. It also gives clear expectations about the services supplied by aged care providers.
