Getting started with Meals on Wheels
Receiving fresh and fabulous food from Meals on Wheels SA is easy. Meals on Wheels SA has no contracts - anyone can refer a customer to us, including yourself, family members, friends, general practitioners, healthcare professionals, community care providers or your local council.
There are several ways you can start receiving meals from Meals on Wheels SA — and we are here to help make the process as simple as possible.
You can:
- Pay privately and start services without involving government assessment, or
- Apply for government-subsidised services, which may reduce your costs.
- If you're in an emergency or urgent situation, we can often start delivering meals right away — then help you with the government assessment and paperwork later. Don’t wait — we’re here to help. Call us now on 1800 854 453
If you are unsure or just need someone to talk you through your options, you can provide your details using our online referral form and we will contact you, or you can call us on 1800 854 453. We are always happy to help.
Option 1: Start Right Away (Private Payment)
If you would like to start meals straight away and don’t want to go through an assessment process, you can choose to pay privately.
There’s no waiting period, and you can begin enjoying our fresh, home-delivered meals immediately. Simply fill out the on line referral form or call us on 1800 854 453 to get the process started.
Option 2: Apply for Government-Subsidised Meals
If you're eligible, the Australian Government may pay part of the cost of your meals through programs such as:
- The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)
- A Home Care Package (HCP)
Who is eligible? You may be eligible if you are:
- 65 years or older (or 55+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), and
- Living at home and needing help with everyday tasks, such as preparing meals.
Meals on Wheels is approved to provide meals under both CHSP and HCP programs.
How to Access Subsidised Services – what are my options?
If you are new to Register with My Aged Care (you don’t have an AC Number)
To get started with subsidised services, you will need to first register with My Aged Care:
- Call 1800 200 422, or visit myagedcare.gov.au and fill in the “Apply for an assessment online” form
- Once you are registered, you’ll have a short phone screening with My Aged Care.
Depending on your needs, you may be referred for a face-to-face assessment with the Regional Assessment Service (RAS). - They will talk with you about what support might help you live independently at home — like meal delivery, help around the house, or other services. Tell them why you need help with meals. This can include the difficulty you are having with shopping and preparing meals, or that you have specialised meal requirements.
If you are already registered, but want to Ask for Help with Meals
If you are already registered (you have an AC number), you can:
- Call My Aged Care and request a Meals Code, and
- Ask to be referred to Meals on Wheels SA for home-delivered meals.
What about if you have a Home Care Package?
If you already have a Home Care Package, just speak with your care coordinator and let them know you’d like Meals on Wheels to provide your meals. If you prefer, you can contact us, and we will discuss your request with the package provider.
If you are new to the package and have already been getting meals from Meals on Wheels you can definitely ask that you continue to get meals from us. It is your choice.
If You Have a NDIS Plan
You may be able to receive Meals on Wheels support through the NDIS.
To receive subsidised meals, your NDIS plan must include:
- Assistance with the Preparation and Delivery of Meals under your Core Supports.
If it’s not listed, you’ll need to pay privately — but you may be able to request a plan review or use flexible core funding if available.
Need help?
- Talk to your Support Coordinator, or call NDIS on 1800 800 110
Under 65 and not on NDIS?
If you’re under 65 and don’t have a NDIS plan, you may still be able to receive subsidised services from Meals on Wheels. Call us on 1800 854 453 or complete our online referral form and we will help you work out the best option.

Social connection
Delivering more than just fabulous food
At Meals on Wheels, your meals come with something extra. In addition to a delicious meal, we deliver a wellbeing check to make sure you are safe and well. If you’re found unwell or in a poor state, a family member or friend will be notified, and if needed, an ambulance will be called.
Your meal delivery also provides an opportunity for meaningful connection. For some, a chat with our deliverers can be the highlight of their day. Additionally, we have a range of social support and food-based programs that encourage healthy living.

Special diets

Requests for the exclusion of some foods due to allergies and other issues may also be accommodated, within reason.
