The Best In The West (Torrens)

Tucked right behind the airport is one happy branch – West Torrens. With Frankie at the helm, there are smiles, laughter, and jokes at every turn. Frankie, the branch coordinator, brings a big personality – previously working as a baker, a cook in a residential care facility, and even spending some time interviewing politicians (which somehow makes perfect sense once you meet him!). His energy is infectious, and he sets the tone for the whole branch. Frankie rolls up his sleeves and gets involved in every part of the day – from meal prep, following food safety requirements to volunteer coordination.

By his side on Mondays is Kym, who’s been volunteering for just four months but already feels right at home. “It’s so enjoyable here,” he says. “It’s the fact that you’re doing something to help. I’m retired and was looking for something meaningful to do – it’s great. Good food and happy customers!” Once he’s finished in the kitchen, Kym jumps in his car to do a delivery round.

Joining them in the kitchen is Laura, also new to the Meals on Wheels family. While ladling soups, she reflects on what she enjoys most: “It’s the friendship. We have fun. And it’s so nice knowing people are getting such a wholesome meal from us.”

And then there’s Silvia – quiet, unassuming, and deeply committed. With 35 years of service under her belt, Silvia doesn’t want a fuss made about her contributions. She’s just there to get the job done – delivering hot, fresh meals to people in the community. She genuinely loves being part of the West Torrens branch.

Mondays also see the self-proclaimed ‘dream team’ hit the road – Kym is joined by Michael, a retired social worker, who brings warmth, care, and attention to detail. These two know their route like the back of their hands – not just the directions, but the stories behind every door. “Next up is Francis – she is amazing,” Michael says with a smile. They double-check everything – “next person has a special meal, and don’t forget the frozen order sheet” – and even call out “clear on the left!” when pulling into busy traffic. Every delivery is made with care and precision.

What makes West Torrens so special is how well connected it feels. It’s more than just a branch – it’s a group of friends coming together to do something meaningful.

And it doesn’t stop there. At Christmas, Frankie hosted a big lunch for everyone, where the entire team pitched in to celebrate together. And of course, he’s got more ideas in the works – always looking for ways to make this happy little branch even better.
