A Century of Love, Service and Community

Sitting together in their Henley home, surrounded by memories of a life well lived, this remarkable couple share something truly special—over 80 years of marriage and a century of stories.

She grew up in Murray Bridge, he in Peterborough. Their paths crossed as teenagers, and from that moment on, they’ve walked through life side by side.

When asked the secret to such a long and happy life, the answer comes simply, “patience… and making sure you love each other. That’s the main thing.”

Their life together has spanned extraordinary change yet it’s the simple things they value most. Family, above all, remains at the heart of everything. With children, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, their legacy is one of deep connection.

“Family means everything.”

Their connection to Meals on Wheels comes full circle. Decades ago, he was a volunteer driver, delivering meals and companionship to others in the community. That passion to serve the community continued through his work as a Police Officer.

“People would be looking out the window, waiting… it was a sort of communication with a friend,” he recalled.

Today, they are on the receiving end of that same kindness, a full circle moment that feels quietly poetic. Now, Meals on Wheels is part of their weekly routine, providing not just nourishment, but reassurance.

“It takes the pressure off and makes sure we’re getting good food.”

Even now, there’s humour and warmth between them. When reflecting on their long marriage, he jokes, "Sometimes I think whatever did she find in me?”

“She is my life,” he adds with a smile.

After 100 years, life has taught them many things, but perhaps the most powerful is empathy.

“If someone comes to you with a problem, give them your whole attention… they’re looking to you for help.”

Though time has brought its challenges, their gratitude remains unwavering. Sitting side by side, he gestures gently toward his wife and says, “I’ve still got her, that’s the main thing.”

And in that simple sentence lies the story of a century: love, resilience and the power of connection.
